My Favourite Goal from Andy Kelly @Gooner_AK

“A good ball by Dixon, finding Smith, for Thomas, charging through the midfield! Thomas, it’s up for grabs now! Thomas! Right at the end!”

Even now, more than thirty years after that game, I can’t think of a single time when I’ve heard those words or visualised that goal and I haven’t had my spine tingle and the hairs on my body stand on end.

Seemingly cruising towards the title after Christmas to end an agonising 18 year drought, Arsenal were agonisingly close to snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. A fourteen point lead had been slowly eroded by Liverpool, leaving the Gunners with an impossible task: a two goal win at Anfield. Alan Smith’s goal early in the second half looked to be a mere consolation; Michael Thomas making matters worse as he fluffed a shot when clean through. How could we come so close?

As the game edged to its conclusion, the Liverpool players were already congratulating themselves but were caught off guard as Arsenal played a simple move – Lukic to Dixon to Smith who played Thomas through once again. This time he timed it perfectly, flicking it over Grobbelaar to release nearly two decades of pent up emotion.
