Neill Collins: My Favourite Goal

Doncaster 0 - Wolves 1 December 20th 2008.

I wasn’t even meant to be starting this game but Michael Mancienne pulled out just before the warm up and I was drafted in. The game itself was a real scrappy affair that could have went either way. Funnily enough I said to Michael Kightly at half time that if he got the opportunity from a set piece to find me and I would score. With 10 minutes left he floated in a free kick and I remember getting there just before Neil Sullivan and heading it into an empty net. It wasn’t the best header I ever scored but it was a really important one. It was right in front of a fantastic Wolves following. We had at least 2000 there and they spilled on to the field while I celebrated in front of them with my team mates piling in. That Wolves team had an unbelievable spirit and after the game the atmosphere in the dressing room was just electric. That win sent us well clear at the top and we went on and won the League. There were many important wins throughout the year but that was a pivotal one and its all those factors that make that goal my favourite.

Neill Collins is a former Wolves player and current Head Coach and Technical Director of the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the USL.
