Karl Matchett: My Favourite Goal

Individualism, movement arrogance and technique: the best strikers have all of the above, and to a young Kopite in the 90's, Robbie Fowler embodied the lot. His goal against Aston Villa in '96 simply stuck in the mind as the perfect execution - embarrass a defender, hit it early, give the 'keeper no chance.

Liverpool terrorised Villa in the opening stages of that particular game and were three goals up in less than eight minutes, with Fowler bagging the latter two. Steve McManaman had already netted a spectacular opener, but it was Fowler's first which left such an impression.

Back to goal and 30 yards out, he took a pass to feet by back-heeling it around Steve Staunton, left him for dead with a few yards of acceleration, took another touch and then absolutely arrowed one, left footed and from 25 yards, into the far corner. Utterly unstoppable, magnificently memorable.
